May 25, 1805 - Clark, William
  • In fact, Clark (Clark, William) wrote most of the May 25 entry—starting with his description of the bighorn—and the first part of the entry for May 26 in a neater and smaller hand than the material immediately preceding and following, and the end of the neater passage on May 26 is obviously crowded in.

  • This is undoubtedly hemp dogbane, as noted under Lewis's (Lewis, Meriwether) entry of July 20, 1806. It is not a coincidence that Lewis (Lewis, Meriwether) also mentions silkgrass and sunflowers together in bottomland habitats. See Lewis's (Lewis, Meriwether) entry of July 20, 1806. This can be neither the false indigo, Amorpha, nor the wild false indigo, Baptesia, since neither are known from the area.
