September 7, 1805 - Clark, William
  • The stream labeled "West Fork of Clarks River (West Fork Bitterroot River (West Fork Clark's River)) " (today's West Fork Bitterroot River (West Fork Bitterroot River (West Fork Clark's River)) ) is too far north according to his course and distance table (here found with the entry of September 9), which is more instructive for the day's route than the text.

This journal runs to March 20, 1806, covering most of the period at Fort Clatsop (Fort Clatsop (Oreg.)) , and is one of the richest in natural history and ethnographical data.

  • .— Ordway (Ordway, John) notes that he was included; he may have been one of the two who accompanied Clark (Clark, William) the whole day, although his entry is not clear on this point. Apparently the swift fox, in spite of Lewis's (Lewis, Meriwether) doubts.
  • It was probably Biddle (Biddle, Nicholas) who drew a red vertical line through the material beginning with "The party who" to the end of the entry. The first scientific description of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, Spermophilus tridecemlineatus.

  • Probably a blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, at Cannon Beach (Cannon Beach, Oreg.) , Clatsop County (Clatsop County, Oreg.) , Oregon (Oregon) . See Clark's (Clark, William) entries of January 6–10, 1806. The rugged headland they called Clark's Point of View (Tillamook Head (Clark's Point of View)) , now Tillamook Head (Tillamook Head (Clark's Point of View)) , on the coast of Clatsop County (Clatsop County, Oreg.) .
  • Clark (Clark, William) reports this incident in his entries of January 8 and 9. Clark (Clark, William) does not mention this name for the river he called Ecola Creek (Ecola Creek (McNeal's Folly)) after the Chinookan (Chinook Indians) word for whale, but Ordway (Ordway, John) uses it.

  • Clark (Clark, William) calls it a prairie cock in his entry. Lewis's (Lewis, Meriwether) bird could be either the western meadowlark or the horned lark (see weather remarks for April 15, 1806), while Clark's (Clark, William) is perhaps the sage grouse, Centrocercus urophasianus [AOU, 309]. Most likely it is the same bird in both entries and one of these three. Holmgren, 29, 31.
