  • Ordway's (Ordway, John) "we-u-che (Weucha (and similar spellings) (La Librator)) " or "Weu-cha (Weucha (and similar spellings) (La Librator)) " (or "weucha (Weucha (and similar spellings) (La Librator)) , La librator (Weucha (and similar spellings) (La Librator)) " in the previous entry), called the head chief, is apparently not the same as Clark's (Clark, William) head chief, Shake Hand (The Shake Hand) .
  • The captains called the area Calumet Bluff (Calumet Bluff (Nebr.)) ; see Clark's (Clark, William) entry of August 28. The grizzly bear, Ursus horribilis, not encountered until October 20.

  • It contains his first known daily journal-keeping since September 17, 1804, except for entries in Clark's (Clark, William) Codex C in February 1805. See the Introduction and Appendix C. From this point we have complete journals by Lewis (Lewis, Meriwether) to August 26, 1805. In their entries for this date the captains provide a complete list of their permanent party bound for the Pacific (Pacific Ocean) .

  • At the end of Whitehouse's (Whitehouse, Joseph) entry of May 27 in the original version and partly running into it comes the following miscellaneous material.
  • The date of its composition is unknown, but Whitehouse (Whitehouse, Joseph) does give the latitude of the Marias River (Marias River) where the party arrived on June 2. The entry of May 28 begins on a new page and section of the notebook. From here the pages are somewhat larger than the preceding section and are bound separately to the animal skin cover.

  • The remarks here follow Lewis (Lewis, Meriwether) with a few differences by Clark (Clark, William) noted. Clark (Clark, William) entry ends here. Clark (Clark, William) adds "in the bottoms."
  • The "narrow leafed willow" here is not the sandbar willow, Salix exigua Nutt., of previous entries east of the Cascades (Cascade Range) , but the Columbia River willow, S. fluviatilis Nutt., an endemic species of the lower Columbia (Columbia River) .

  • it was about the size of a robin—["] This entry ends Lewis's (Lewis, Meriwether) notebook Codex F. His entries for August 23–26, 1805, are in the unbound fragment Codex Fb.
  • Here in Codex F, p. 153 (the back fly leaf), is Lewis's (Lewis, Meriwether) note "see the first page," with a pointing hand symbol. The entry is completed on the front flyleaf of the codex which Coues numbered p. 154.

  • But I wish I could explain how we ever came up with an entry like "Bird, black" for "Blackbirds" or "Snake, rattle" for "Rattlesnakes." At least we never had an entry, "Fish, cat." But what about indexing subjects, themes, ideas, and concepts?
  • When entries became too long, we added subcategories. Under canoes, for instance, we had accidents, construction, loaded, navigational problems, obtained, portaged, problems with, repaired, and unloaded.
