Technical Summary
  • Items that needed to be addressed included naming the author of the entry, creating/attaching hyperlinks to footnotes, and allowing navigation between journal entries.
  • In order to permit the chronological conflation of all the entries in the Journals, the team developed an apparatus within the XML markup that indicates the date of the current file, the date of the file immediately preceding the current file, and the date of the file immediately following the current file.

  • American lotus, yellow nelumbo, yellow lotus, water chinquapin, pond-nuts, is an aquatic plant that Lewis (Lewis, Meriwether) describes more elaborately in an undated entry. "Pokers hake" may be Clark's (Clark, William) attempt at the Kickapoo (Kickapoo Indians) name, which Lewis (Lewis, Meriwether) wrote as Po-kish'-a-co-mah.
  • Lisbet (Lisbet, Thomas) Blacksmith" on document 2 of the Field Notes (placed under November 26, 1803, entry). Nothing is known of this person. Osgood read it as "Leebice (Labiche, François) " (which it may well be) and related that to François Labiche (Labiche, François) , a member of the party.

  • (Musquters bad) 22 ¼ The courses and distances appear to be the only entry for August 10, 1804, in the Field Notes. The similar brevity of the Codex A entry for this day suggests that Clark (Clark, William) had little time or energy left at the end of the day.

  • Smoke Creek (La Chapelle (Smoke) Creek) on Atlas map 22, the reason for the name being found in the second Field Notes entry; later La Chapelle Creek (La Chapelle (Smoke) Creek) , or Chapelle Creek (La Chapelle (Smoke) Creek) , named for a French Canadian trader of later times, in Hughes County (Hughes County, S.
  • It appears from this notation that Clark (Clark, William) intended to seal up the sheets of the Field Notes to this point to be sent back down the river with dispatches. He had started separate entries on another loose sheet (document 58) for September 22 and 23.

  • Highway 287) crosses the Jefferson (Jefferson River (North, Southwest Fork)) . Atlas map 65. Following this entry is Clark's (Clark, William) course and distance table for the period July 27, 30–31, and part of August 1, 1805, that he has labeled: "Course and Distance up the main North fork of the Missouri (Jefferson River (North, Southwest Fork)) ."
  • We do not repeat the material for July, but place the August 1 courses with the remainder, which Clark (Clark, William) carried over to p. 46 of this journal (Codex G), interrupting his entry of August 5, the date at which they appear here. Throughout this part of the journal the narrative and course material is very cut up.

  • York (York) killed 2 Geese & 8 white, black and Speckle Brants, The White Brant, with part of their wings black is much the largest, the black brant is verry Small, a little larger than a large Duck—    the deer pore but large Again asterisks precede the dateline for unknown reason. Both this entry and the Codex H courses and distances indicate a movement of two miles west on this day. However, Atlas map 82 and fig. 1 (in volume 6) show the campsite of November 15 as being the one at which the main party remained until November 25, and Biddle's (Biddle, Nicholas) entry for the day also indicates no movement. An "X" next to the usual camp symbol on that map may indicate a move.

  • S. E" in the text of the Codex M entry and "S. 30° W." in the codex courses and distances. To the southwest would lie the Absaroka Range (Absaroka Range) , the Beartooth Mountains (Beartooth Mountains) , the Granite Range (Granite Range) , and other highlands in the vicinity of the Yellowstone Plateau (Yellowstone Plateau) .
  • Part of this page in the first draft version is missing, resulting in gaps in the courses for this day and for July 19, 1806. See the Codex M entries for missing information.
